OSTRAKINDA
OLIVIER LÉTÉ
«At the beginning was the forest.
Strings, stones, skins are rubbed, the trumpet sometimes sounds like a trumpet of immemorial ages. The almost tribal groove that animates this trio always carries the song, but it is also the song that at other times attracts to it as if magnetized the formidable minimalism charged with all the history of the music that the bass and the percussions allow themselves. One rustles, one takes time, one develops, one settles down as at the time of a bivouac to share and sublimate the elements around one.
The players of ostrakinda, in ancient Greece, used to chase each other, white team against black team, you during the day, me during the night and the roles could be reversed at the mercy of a two-colored shell thrown at the edge of a line separating the two groups thus formed.
Here the chase, the historical chase of jazz, does not put the instruments in competition but seeks the unexpected, provokes it. The writing seems simple but the forms of improvisation which escape from it allow themselves to summon all the most mastered techniques of play with a precious parsimony.
The sound of this trio is quite unique.
After listening, it remains almost like a smell of wood and earth after the rain in the ear.»
