We Stay Still
Matthieu Mazué Trio
«If the tutelary figure of Mal Wadron seems to fly over these tracks and in particular White Fields which introduces the album, it seems to tend to erase as the deeply original discourse deepens and sharpens at the same time. Here, it’s not about inspiration but about escape, without running away. The trio knows each other well, works a lot, builds, deconstructs, reconstructs and finds a deeply original language which, even if it summons history, never ceases to develop a resolutely modern, open language, which leaves a great freedom to its protagonists.
The compositions of the pianist, the long improvised developments proposed weave a complex but fluid canvas at the same time which holds in breath from beginning to end. Nothing is set in stone, the flexibility of the trio and the numerous memories summoned during the journey that one undertakes while listening to the ensemble finish weaving the stays of an imaginary bridge that seems to allow successive generations to prolong, to continue the conversation.
It’s unexpected, it’s fresh, it doesn’t go in the direction of the hair and yet a certain calmness inhabits this recording as if maturity was already knocking at the door of these musicians not yet thirty years old.»
