Bringing together eight musicians from the Conservatoire de Strasbourg and HEAR with eclectic backgrounds and influences, the Free Wheel Ensemble offers a program that subtly blends sophisticated writing and embodied improvisations, highlighting the singular timbres of the instruments. Initially based on pieces by English trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler - who liked to say that his favorite thing in life was to write sad tunes and let great musicians undo them - this exploration was gradually enriched by original compositions to crystallize into a rich and varied repertoire, a poetic and earthy balance that joyfully oscillates between furious swing, irresistible grooves, orchestral density and sweetness.
