On all fronts of modern jazz and improvised music for years, Hélène Labarrière has pursued a dual career as a sidewoman – engaged in a series of long-term partnerships with some of the most creative musicians on the contemporary scene – and as an inspired conductor seeking to synthesise, in an always more personal language, her own distinctive path through the multiple genres that make up today's experimental and popular music. By imagining her new project as a series of musical evocations of five great international figures of female emancipation (from Louise Michel to Angela Davis), the double bassist, leading a new quintet as virtuosic as it is flamboyant, embarks on a kind of multi-faceted selfportrait of great lyrical and expressive intensity.
