RACINES
Born and/or living in France for many years, but with a wealth of family histories connecting them to other cultures, the four musicians in this ensemble have chosen to collectively question what their artistic expressions owe to their respective roots – Ukraine and Moldavia for Sylvain Kassap and his son Nils; Armenia for Claude Tchamitchian; Turkey for Anil Eraslan. Working on a repertoire of traditional pieces and original themes inspired by this ‘oriental’ tropism, the quartet puts the chamber nature of its orchestration at the service of a sort of imaginary folklore with contemporary overtones, taking in snippets of forms, rhythms and harmonies related to these traditions which are as much lived as fantasised, to better transfigure them through the prism of the freest and most unrestrained collective improvisation.
