23STB PESSOA : L’INTRANQUILLITÉ
Jazz has often engaged in fruitful dialogue with poetry – just think of Langston Hughes with Charles Mingus, Jack Kerouac with Al Cohn, Amiri Baraka with Archie Shepp; or in the French-speaking world, Serge Pey with Bernard Lubat, ... – but what drummer Christophe Marguet, double bassist Claude Tchamitchian and actor Frédéric Pierrot have set out to do in this highly unusual performance is of a completely different nature. A deep dive into texts taken from The Book of Intranquillity by the great Lisbon poet Fernando Pessoa to reveal their secret prosody through the prism of jazz, with their underlying rhythmic flows and, ultimately, their intact lyrical beauty more than a hundred years after they were written. As if revived by the risk of improvisation, Pessoa's avant-garde prose has never spoken to us so directly.
