Percussionist Yuko Oshima draws on traditional Japanese music, invoking the rich writing and sober phrasing of Nagauta, and finds inspiration in the thriving Edo period for a project that celebrates the present, a time of pleasures, creative energy and the intelligence of life. The band's name, made up of Ukiyo (the floating world) and Oto (sound), reflects the epicurean spirit of the Edo period: to express this boldness, Yuko Oshima invites eclectic improviser Olivier Lété on bass and Japanese guitarist Kazuhisa Uchihashi whose daxophone has a very wide range of tones. Together, they will explore the themes of relativity, independence, the singularity of sound, the beauty of the MA or flexibility, and embark on a quest for that most distinctive Japanese groove.
