Think Big brings together two of the most active musicians on the French post-(free) jazz scene, double bassist Thibault Cellier and saxophonist Raphaël Quenehen – from Rouen's Vibrants Défricheurs collective, with two key figures from Chicago's new avant-garde scene – drummer and composer, AACM member Mike Reed and cornetist Ben Lamar Gay. The quartet updates the combined libertarian energies of Great Black Music and European Free Music in a resolutely collectivist discourse. Placing improvisation at the core of their approach, much like a kind of Esperanto, the four musicians combine all the world's musics in a single unifying gesture, merging them into a baroque and larger than life sound extravaganza.
