Robin Fincker, France's most Anglophile saxophonist and clarinettist, has already revisited the Anglo-Saxon folk tradition through the prism of jazz and improvised music with his band Bedmakers. Now taking things a step further, he has teamed up with British Hammond organist Kit Downes and Irish singer Lauren Kinsella for Shadowlands, to create a deeply unique musical style that draws on a repertoire of early music, original folk songs and revisited plainsong, providing the poetic material for a kind of chamber music that is both archaic and ultra-contemporary. On the edges of genres, working on silence and the suggestive power of ellipsis, the trio creates a music of chiaroscuro, rich in magical sound textures of great imaginary power.
