NDUDUZO MAKHATHINI
A flamboyant and charismatic personality, and spearhead of the effervescent new South African jazz scene, pianist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini, first discovered as a member of Shabaka Hutchnigs' band and signed to the legendary Blue Note label at the turn of the decade, is undoubtedly one of the great new talents on the international music scene. Influenced by the religious and ritual dimensions at the heart of Zulu musical traditions, endorsed by legendary pianist Behki Mseleku and fascinated by the lyricism of McCoy Tyner, Nduduzo Makhathini, leading a trio of astonishing organic cohesion, creates jazz that is at once melodic, danceable, sensual and highly spiritual, deeply rooted in South African culture and resolutely open to the contemporary world and its many cross-fertilisations.
