Flautist Sylvaine Hélary and saxophonist Robin Fincker first crossed paths in the early 2010s as part of the Surnatural Orchestra. Having come to improvisation via very different routes (free jazz for one; contemporary music for the other), but immediately acknowledging a shared taste for complex sound materials, delicate harmonies and sophisticated rhythms, the two artists decided to found the Bize duet. Playing with all the nuances of an unusual orchestration, to say the least, Sylvaine Hélary and Robin Fincker elegantly entwine the sonorities and dynamics of their respective instruments to develop, through a wide variety of settings and playing modes, a music at the ‘crossroads’, at once lyrical, spontaneous and highly refined.
