Matthieu Bordenave 4et
French saxophonist Matthieu Bordenave, Munich-based, was first revealed in 2020 with the release on the ECM label of his album La Traversée, whose orchestration and tonalities are reminiscent of the chamber (free)jazz of Jimmy Giuffre's famous trio with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow. He returns today, still accompanied by German pianist Florian Weber and Swiss double bassist Patrice Moret, but this time joined by the pointillist drumming of Londoner James Maddren, in a quartet configuration that considerably alters the dynamics and colours of his music. Placing this new project under the joint influence of Coltrane's late period and the talents of composer Paul Motian as a melodist, the saxophonist explores the more specifically jazz side of his universe in a lyrical music with resolutely open forms.
